The Detroit race riot was the bloodiest of the race riots of the summer of '67. It was sparked by a bar raid that led to several confrontations between the cops and the rioters. There was a lot of looting of local stores on the first day, the police unable to do anything because of the lack of officers stood there inticing rioters. The looting was spreading throughout the city fast and by the second day two fires had been started. To clear rioters off the streets they began mass arrests and overfilled their jails overloading the system many got away with giving fake names. The police became so stressed they stopped discerning between civilian and rioters. This only added to the anger, and the violence got worse. Then the president sent in troops which escalated the situation farther. The police department was found guilty of intense brutality to their prisoners both black and white witch added to the gray area of the situation.
