German forces started an onslaught at Verdun, east of Paris, on February 25, 1916, in an effort to "bleed France white" and bring the nation to the bargaining table.
German forces go forward but are stopped. Despite devastating deaths, the frontlines have hardly moved by the time fighting concludes in December.
Overall, each side loses roughly the same number of men—more than 300,000—and hundreds of thousands more are injured.
The Battle of Verdun was the longest on the Western Front of the War, lasting more than 300 days.
