Italian physicist, mathematician, and astronomer who made important contributions to many areas of science, including mechanics and the study of the solar system. Galileo is best known for his pioneering work in the use of the telescope for astronomical observations, and for his development of the laws of motion. One of his most famous formulas is the law of falling bodies, which states that the distance fallen by a freely falling object is proportional to the square of the time elapsed.
