British mathematician known for his work in group theory and his collaboration with John Conway on "Monstrous Moonshine." Norton is best known for his contributions to the study of finite simple groups and their symmetries. He also co-discovered the Norton-Simon vertex operator algebra, which plays an important role in string theory and other areas of mathematical physics.
