Margaret Thatcher led the Conservatives to power pledging lower taxes, reduce government bureaucracy, limit social welfare, restrict union power, and end inflation. Thatcher did break the power of labour unions and took away parts of the social welfare program to control inflation. She also helped to rebuild the British military that was used in the Falkland Islands when Argentina tried to take them over.
