He was an evil king, because he made and worshiped2 golden calves and he made priests that were not Levites for the calves. 1 King 12:25-33
Ahijah the prophet took his cloak and ripped it into 12 pieces and showed Jeroboam and told him that God would take Solomon's kingdom away and give 10 tribes to Jeroboam and the rest to someone else.
Jeroboam was made king by Ahijah tearing his cloak into 12 pieces and saying he would become king of the 10 tribes
