March on Washington (28 Aug 1963 Jahr – 1 Jan 1964 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a political demonstration held in D.C. It protested against racial discrimination and showed support for major civil rights legislation that was pending in Congress. On August 28th 1963, 200,000 interracial people gathered together in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial to demand equal justice for all citizens. They were uplifted by the emotional strength given by Martin Luther King Jr. through his speech “I have a dream”. He emphasized that all men would someday become brothers. This greatly impacted national opinion and resulted in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This guaranteed equal voting rights, no discrimination in public places such as restaurants and theatres and it also encouraged school desegregation.
