Magellan was under the service of Portuguese, and he thought that by continue sailing westward, they will reach the spice islands that is in the Spanish hemisphere due to the Treaty of Tordesillas. This idea was consented by the government and he set on his trip on September 20, 1519. On December 18th, Magellan and his men finally reached the south coast of South America. After another 99 days of only ocean water and no fresh food, they finally saw some lands, which were the Mariana Islands. On March 9th, 1521, they left the Marianas and continued sailing westward. In the Late March and early April, they ultimately reached the philipines. However Magellan was killed in a fight. The ships finally returned to Portugal on September 6th, 1522. Magellan is known for masterminding the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe.
