The Spanish Crown gave Ponce de Leon permission to set an expedition to the nearby islands. Ponce de Leon brought 50 men and one ship. He then conquered the island that is known as Puerto Rico today.

On April 3, 1513, Ponce de Leon landed on the coast of Florida today. He found that this vast land had florid vegetation and they also landed around Easter which is Pascua Florida in Spanish, he decided to call this place Florida. On his first trip to Florida, he found the Florida Keys and the Gulf Stream, which is a warm ocean current that helped the later Spanish exploreres to travel to the "New World" easier. Febuary 1521, Ponce de Leon got on another trip to Florida with more people. This time, he wanted to set up a farming colony. However, the natives attacked them and Ponce de Leon was wounded and eventually dead when sailed back to Havena, Cuba.
