(1) Cases of beliefs over the Encomienda system: Juan De Sepulveda vs. Bartolome De Las Casas (1 Jan 1500 Jahr – 1 Jan 1594 Jahr)

The Encomienda system brought much controversy, particularly over the treatment of the native Americans.

Juan De Sepulveda: he advocated for the harsh treatment of the N. A and sought to convert them into Christians. He saw N.A as barbarous and uncivilized in order to justify the mistreatment of N.A b/c N.A were "inferior"

Bartolome De Las Casas: (originally a slave owner but gave up his deal of land and became a bishop). He advocated for the Equal treatment of N.A and ended up helping ENDING the encomienda system. --> In his writings he also defended Columbus claiming that he could not have foreseen all these problems.
