The New Republic, or simply the Republic, was a democratic union of various planets across the galaxy and was the restoration of the Galactic Republic that was supplanted by the Galactic Empire and reestablished by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Chancellor was the title of the leader of the Republic, and governed by the New Republic Senate under the Charter of the New Republic and comprised senators representing its member worlds. Instead of affixing its Senate to Coruscant, the galaxy's historical seat of government, the capital shifted from one Republic world to another on a rotating basis, beginning with Chandrila. The New Republic Defense Force was significantly reduced, serving as a peacekeeping force while individual member worlds raised their own planetary defense forces. The New Republic was only a fraction of the size of its predecessors, and therefore, relied on egalitarian policies to remain on friendly terms with neutral star systems.
