Was not new but the catholic church said it was from the devil and if someone was accused of being a witch they could be burned at the stake of hung if in England. The witch trials was when mover 100,000 were accused and some confessed after being tortured. Had a decline by the mid 1600's because of religious toleration, stabilizing governments and less people believing in evil spirits.
