Slavery as a practice of enslaving Africans for life had been established in Virginia and was legal by the 1640s. By 1750 the system of slavery was common to all thirteen colonies. Since the climate and soil of the South was suitable for crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo, slavery was used on a much larger scale. The disagreement over the institution of slavery was the cause of the Civil War. On January 31, 1865, Congress passed the 13th amendment that abolished slavery in the U.S.
