The War of 1812 was fought by the United States against Great Britain after they had won their independence. The three main reasons were Britain’s interference with U.S. trade and impressment of seamen, Americans’ desire to expand settlement into British territory, and desire to conquer Canada and remove British from North America. The War of 1812 gave the United States international respect and instilled nationalism among the citizens. The Treaty of Ghent formally ended the war with no significant change to borders.
