r. Louis XIV + Mazarin (1 Jan 1643 Jahr – 1 Jan 1715 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Richelieu’s successor, Cardinal Jules Mazarin, served the 4-year-old Louis XIV. With Queen Mother Anne of Austria, he continued Richelieu’s legacy. This led to the Fronde, 1648-1653 uprisings, which were encouraged by aristocratic nobles. After it died out, leaders came to terms with the government.

Under Louis XIV (“Sun King”), France became the most powerful nation in Western Europe. He believed God established kings like him. He was personally tolerant but hated division and therefore insisted on religious unity, and revoked Edict of Nantes, and ordered the destruction of Huguenot worship and way of life. A glorious and lavish palace at Versailles was designated as the home of Louis’s court and government.

Jean-Baptiste Colbert was minister after Mazarin. He believed the wealth and economy of France should serve the state and applied mercantilist policies to France. He focused on the textile industry, established new production regulations, created guilds to boost quality standards, encouraged foreign craftsmen to immigrate to France, abolished many domestic tariffs, increased foreign product tariffs, and founded the Company of East Indies with hopes of competing with Dutch. He sent 4000 colonists to Quebec in hopes of making Canada a part of the French empire.
