First Ottoman-Venetian War (1 Jan 1463 Jahr – 25 Jan 1479 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
In 1464, the Venetian fortress of Argos was destroyed by the Ottomans under Mehmed II. Venice allied with Matthias Corvinus of Hungary and attacked the Greek islands by sea and Bulgaria by land, though after a few minor victories they were forced to retreat. In 1470, the Ottomans moved on a massive counteroffensive resulting in Venice losing its main Aegean Sea stronghold, Negroponte. Venice sought allies such as Persia but received limited support and could only mount small scale attacks. The Ottomans conquered the Peloponnesus and attacked the Venetian mainland. Their Persian allies were severely defeated and Venice was left alone. However, Scutari heroically resisted and forced the Ottomans from Albania, while a revolt in Cyprus gave the island back to Venice in 1473. Then Scutari fell in 1475 and Friuli was invaded and sacked. In 1479, a peace treaty was finally signed with the Ottomans, ceding Argo, Negroponte, Lemnos and Scutari and agreeing an annual tribute. Mehmed II's successor, Bayezid II, confirmed the treaty with a peaceful exchange of island Zakynthos and Kefalonia.
