War of the Straits (1 Jan 1350 Jahr – 1 Jun 1355 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Disputes over the Black Sea prompted another outbreak of war, in which Venice allied with King Peter IV of Aragon who had been clashing with Genoa over control of Sardinia. Following clashes in Aegean Sea and around the Bosphorus, the Byzantine Emperor John VI entered the war on the Venetian side. A Venetian-Catalan fleet fought the bloody Battle of the Straits against a Genoese fleet in the Bosphorus in 1352, pushing the Byzantines out of the war and bringing the Venetian-Catalan fleet to withdraw. The Venetian-Catalan fleet would crush the Genoese off Sardinia in 1353, prompting Genoa to submit to Lord Giovanni Visconti of Milan to gain his financial support. The Genoese captured the entire Venetian fleet in the Peloponnese in 1354, leading the Venice making peace with Genoa and the deposition of Venetian Doge Marino Faliero. This peace was inconclusive but Venice's exhaustion from war would contribute to the loss of Dalmatia to Hungary shortly afterwards.
