Period 6: Westward Expansion & Antebellum Era (1 Jan 1828 Jahr – 1 Jan 1860 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Enduring Understanding: As Manifest Destiny motivated westward expansion in the United States, the debate over slavery became fiercer as Northern and Southern states grappled for political power. The conflicts over whether to allow slavery in the new Western states led to bloody conflicts such as the Mexican-American War and Bleeding Kansas, and eventually led to the Civil War when the South seceded to preserve slavery.

Evaluate the factors that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War. Name at least 3 factors.

After the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the slavery controversy was renewed because the U.S. gained a lot of territories, but the states didn’t agree on whether to make those territories free or slave states. The Missouri Compromise(1820( failed to stop tensions) and Kansas Nebraska act was passed. When Kansas and Nebraska states entered the Union, the balance of the Union was bound to shift, and that continued to raise tension in the Union. As more questions on slavery arise in the Union, the North, and South continue to grow more adamantly in their views on slavery, so the election of 1860 will be the final straw before the war since the nation was split and the president would determine whose voices would be heard. Abraham Lincoln (republican, North would feel more supported) vs his opponent democrat, and Lincoln won the election which was the final straw in the south seceeding.
