The Alien and Sedition acts were a series of laws that were designed to restrict their political opponents, the Democratic-Republicans
The Naturalization Act increased the rate of years required for immigrants to apply for US citizenship from 5 to 14 years
The Alien Act which authorized the president to deport aliens considered dangerous and to detain enemy aliens in time of war
The Sedition Act, which made it illegal for newspaper editors to criticize either the president or Congress and imposed fines or imprisonment for editors who violated the law
These were significant as they were the first time that laws were questioned for being unconstitutional and the question of states rights was brought up
