In 1942, the first V-2 Rocket was launched by Germany. The V-2 was typically used as a weapon, and contained about 1,600 pounds of highly explosive material.

The rocket was 14 meters long, 1.65 meters in diameter, and it weighed between 12,700 and 13,200 kg. At liftoff, the rocket develops about 60,000 pounds of thrust, which equals out to about double the weight of the rocket before liftoff.

At peak altitude, the rocket normally reached
roughly 80 kilometers high. However, in 1944, Germany launched a V-2 rocket which reached 175 kilometers high, officially becoming the first rocket to reach space. Considering this rocket was the first to reach space, it was only a single-stage rocket.
