Skirmish at Leighton's House (Layton's) on Fair Forest Creek (1 März 1781 Jahr – 31 März 1781 Jahr)

Lt. John Jolly, with a small patrol of seven Patriots, rode near the mouth of Fair Forest Creek looking for evidence of Loyalist activity. They stopped at a house of an old man named Leighton who "was of doubtful politics, with an inclination to the strongest side." Jolly did not know a group of 100 Loyalist were camped on the opposite side of the creek. The Loyalist surrounded the house but two Patriots escaped on horseback. Jolly and Charles Crane ran from the house with Lt Jolly being killed and Crane escaped. The other four men put up a fierce fight until nightfall when they ran low on powder and were taken prisoner.
