Following nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypt, Anglo-French troops, with Israeli support, invade the Sinai region of Egypt. While there is a military victory for the imperialist forces, America's refusal to support the operation and its subsequent recognition of Egypt's right to the canal meant that the Anglo-French troops were forced to evacuate. The loss of the Suez Canal was a major blow to European colonialism, and in particular the British Empire in the far east, which found itself unable to be sustained without unlimited access through this vital lifeline.
