A revival movement of personal piety, which later historians dubbed the First Great Awakening, sweeps England and the American colonies, giving rise to impassioned preaching that would characterize sermons for the next several decades. A seminal example is Jonathan Edwards’ sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” (1741).

This movement swept through Europe, and the colonies as a revival of personal piety, which in turn help the rise of impassioned preaching of sermons. A great example is "sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards
