THE GREAT FAMINE (click for more) (1 Jan 1845 Jahr – 1 Jan 1852 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Great Famine (also known as the Great Hunger, the Famine or the Irish Potato Famine), was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1852, with the most severely affected areas in the west and south of Ireland. The worst year of the period was 1847, known as "Black '47". During The Great Famine, about 1 million people died and more than a million fled the country, causing the country's population to fall by roughly 25%, in some towns falling as much as nearly 70%. By 1855, more than 2.1 million people left Ireland - one of the greatest exoduses from a single island in history.

The primary cause of The Famine was a potato blight that caused the potato crop the Irish were overly dependent on to fail, but it was exacerbated by absentee British landlords who sold off the other crops of their tenants for profit instead of using them as much-needed food. The British in power often viewed the Irish as lesser-than, and the results of the Famine being "deserved" due to their "laziness", lack of education, Catholicism, etc. The Famine was a defining moment in the history of Ireland, and its effects permanently changed the island's demographic, political, and cultural landscape, spurring a century-long population decline. The strained relations between many Irish and their ruling British government worsened further because of The Famine, heightening ethnic and religious tensions and boosting nationalism and republicanism both in Ireland and among Irish emigrants around the world. The famine became part of the long story of betrayal and exploitation which led to the growing movement in Ireland for independence.
