The "Sixties Scoop" refers to the large-scale removal or "scooping" of Indigenous children from their homes, communities, and families of birth throughout the United States and Canada in the 1960s, and their subsequent adoption into primarily non-Indigenous, middle-class households. Many adoptees have lost their sense of cultural identity as a result of this experience. Adult adoptees and Indigenous communities are still affected by their physical and emotional separation from their biological families.
