Afraid that the Communist revolution was running out of steam, Mao started the cultural revolution which attempted to capture the glory days of the Revolution. Anyone still practice old traditions were humiliated and persecuted. Many old statues and buildings and art were destroyed. Intellectuals were sent to the countryside to work. The real purpose was to consolidate Mao's revolution.
