A 13 day stand off between the United States, the Soviet Union and the newly Soviet allied Cuba over the installation of short-ranged ballistic missiles on the island of Cuba, 90 miles from Florida. With tensions and fear of nuclear war hanging in the air, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev eventually returned the weapons to Russia after the US promised not to invade Cuba.
