Cause (International): China's agreement to supply 2,700 troops to Korea to restore order during the Donghak Rebellion was supposedly a violation of China and Japan's Convention of Tietsin. This sparked lingering tensions between both sides.
Effect (International): First Sino Japanese War sparked, and Japan won. Japan forced a degree of economic dominance over China.
Cause (Domestic): Japan's interest over Korea (particularly the Formosa Islands) because of its iron and coal, as well as it's strategic location led it to heavily invest in taking control over it.
Effect (Domestic): Japan seized part of the region of Manchuria and all of Shandong Province and the island of Formosa (modern-day Taiwan).
