This was the idea that the United States is destined to expand its dominion and spread democracy and capitalism across the entire North American continent. This was even part of the sentiment behind the Monroe Doctrine. The key points during this time period were the reannexation of Texas and the acquisition of California. This would not come to pass without a war with Mexico. The origin of the phrase which embodied this concept first appeared in an editorial published in the July-August 1845 issue of The Democratic Review.
