American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two major Japanese cities, were the first use of atomic weapons in war. Tens of thousands were killed during the initial bombings, and many more died due to radiation poisoning. Following the bombing of Nagasaki, the Japanese government agreed to accept the Allied surrender terms.
