World War II was a great power conflict during the mid 20th century that occurred because of the instability caused by the Treaty of Versailles and the rise of totalitarian governments in places such as Germany and Italy.

The Treaty of Versailles, which was a treaty created after the end of World War I, was dominated by Britain and France, Russia having dropped out of the war early due to revolution. In the treaty, Germany was humiliated as it received most of the blame for starting World War I (this is called the war guilt clause), and many of the allied nations left unsatisfied as well. All of this meant that no one was happy with the new balance of power on the European Continent.

Totalitarian governments also became more prevalent after World War I, and the world was the rise of Nazi Germany, Italy under Benito Mussolini, and the Stalinist USSR. Specifically, Nazi Germany was a fascist regime and valued "lebensraum" (room for expansion), as well as being extremely antisemitic. This eventually led to Germany seeking to expand its territory and carrying out a genocide against Jewish citizens.

World War I involved greater levels of civilian destruction than in previous wars, as civilians contributed more and more to the war effort and bombing became a regular occurrence. Eventually, nuclear bombs were dropped on Japan, leading to the end of the war in the Pacific, and the allies carried out a land invasion of Germany, ending the war.
