Britain and the United States signed the Oregon Treaty on June 15, 1846. This treaty established the border between the United States and Canada at the 49th Parallel. The treat gave the U.S. control over the area that would one day become the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana. (U.S.-Canadian Border, 2010.)
