The Decline of Kongo Kingdom (1 Jan 1568 Jahr – 1 Jan 1710 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

In the mid 16th century, the Portuguese began focusing their attention to Ndongo after the Kongo made restrictions on trade. While this happened, internal conflicts within Kongo royalty began to take a toll on the kingdom and its people. These tensions left the Kongo in a weakened state, making them prone to attackers. In 1568, enemy warriors called the Jagas temporarily took over the country. After receiving aid from the Portuguese, the kingdom was restored.

In return for their help, the Portuguese were given the territory called Luanda. This region became the Portuguese colony of Angola. The new neighboring colony staged an invasion into the southern region of the kingdom in 1622. These tensions worsened when border disputes led to a series of skirmishes in 1665. Ultimately, the Portuguese won and killed the current manikongo. From there on out, the Kongo failed to function as a unified kingdom, eventually being taken over by various groups of traders.
