Concert Spirituel (1 Jul 1725 Jahr – 1 Jul 1790 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The earliest significant European concert series, organized in Paris by the court composer Anne Danican Philidor. He created the series as a means to present musical entertainments on religiious holidays, especially during the Lenten season, when opera houses were closed. The main ingredients of the event, held in a palce in the Tuileries Gardens, were pious cantatas with Latin texts and concerted grands motets in keeping with the spiritual nature. Because these concerts were substitutes for opera, they began with an overture--that is, a sifonia or symphonie--which retained its traditional position as festive curatain raiser. At the first Concert Spiritual, Arcangelo Corelli's Christmas Concerto served this purpose. Specially composed symphonies after the Italian opera overture model quickly became standard; indeed, this concert series stimulated their production.

The Concert Spirituel set the tone for concert programs throughout the 18th century. Concerts usually were variety shows mixing vocal music with instrumental and often sacred with secular works. Concerts of only instrumental works were rare before the nineteenth century, except for some outdoor ones featuring wind bands. The idea of what we now call a "symphony concert," with the audience listening in rapt attention to one orchestral work after another, did not yet exist; a symphony was just one of the ingredients, typically the opener, and sometimes its separate movements were spread out over the course of the event.
