Troubadour tradition (1 Jan 1100 Jahr – 1 Jan 1200 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Vernacular lyric poetry from the south of France (Aquitaine), written in Provençal (Occitan).
Courtly/Knightly songs.
“A troubadour’s subject matter was the life he led, viewed in terms of his social and romantic relations, which were ceremonial, idealized, and ritualized to a point approaching the sacred. In keeping with the rarefied subject matter, the genres and styles of troubadour verse were highly formalized. Many songs dealt with feudal service that reflected the hierarchical structure of lords and vassals… The bond between lord and vassal was sealed through a ritual of homage: the vassal, placing his hands in the lord’s, swore an oath of loyalty that obliged him to perform certain specified duties, including military service. The lord, in tun, bound himself to protect the vassal. The feudal nobility was thus primarily a military caste system, a hierarchy of knights, or warriors-in-service.”
