"Rebirth" Period. Shift from Medieval mindset. Renewed interest in antiquity. Great desire to return to the original sources. Authority comes from sources rather than influential rulers and leaders. Renaissance men are called humanists because they were concerned with man (though not about redefining man).
Central cry of the Renaissance is ad fontes; "Back to the sources." Also led to a growing confidence in reason.
