The Haudenosaunee emerged as a confederacy of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca peoples, with the addition of the Tuscarora after 1722. The confederacy reached peak political power around 1700 and spread from today's New York north into Canada, west to the Great Lakes, and south into the Ohio Valley.
