united states marines landed on the island Iwo Jima believing it could be captured in 4 days. but the japanese on the island had built underground tunnels and strongholds beneath the sand.marines had to go tunnel by tunnnel with flaethrowers and gernades to flush out the japanese strongholds. 1 outo of 3 marines fighting were either wounded or killed in this battle
