Challenged modern world to create a modern architecture out of iron and glass, as well as timber and masonry.

Challenge met in various ways - experimental Art Nouveau, but none of them really worked. The real answers did not come from philosophy of Gothic, but from classical tradition which all Europe had shared with antiquity for so long.
