Americans marines landed on a small volcanic island of Iwo Jima. US commanders believed that the island could be captured in four days, but the Japanese on the island had already created tunnels and strongholds deep beneath the black sands and underlying rock of the island. By the end of March the island had fallen, everyone that was on the island was either killed (5,885 people) or wounded (23,573 people).
