confederate General Robert E lee signs the terms of surrender, the terms loosely translated as a gentleman's agreement. the union wanted to patch up the rift caused by the war so there was not going to be any flaunting of victory just acceptance. general lee leading the last of the confederate army this brought the end formally of the civil war.
