In 1848, Chinese Immigrants joined the California Gold Rush, since The Opium war that was between China and Great Britain left them in debt. In 1852, over 20,000 Chinese immigrants came to San Francisco looking for work. Violence broke down between white minors and Chinese immigrants. So in California, they imposed a foreign miner tax of $3 a month to target Chinese immigrants. In 1854, Supreme Court ruled that the Chinese immigrants just like African Americans can't testify in court which made seeking justice impossible for them. By 1870, Chinese immigrants had paid over 5 million dollars to the Foreign miner tax, but they still faced discrimination. In 1882, the act of Chinese Exclusion Act suspended Chinese immigration for ten years. Li Keng Wong was an elementary teacher in San Francisco, she shared her experience with her family coming to America and what Chinese immigrants had to go through in Angel Island to live in America. “Mama gasped. Li Hong and I exchanged glances. Lai Wah’s reply had been honest and natural. But would the officials think she was very rude?" This piece of text that she wrote shows the feeling that Li Keng wong was very anxious while moving to America.
