The Soviet War in Afghanistan (24 Dez 1979 Jahr – 15 Feb 1989 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
In December 1979, Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan with the goal of establishing and spreading their communist and pro-Soviet government. With the United States expanding allyship in the Middle East, the Soviet feared losing their ally and communist proxy, Afghanistan. The Soviet Union spent a lot of money on the war against Afghanistan leading to almost 100,000 Soviet soldiers fighting in the country. Afghanistan’s resistance, known as the Mujahideen, however, was heavily supported by other countries including the United States. This support led to Afghanistan prevailing and the Soviets withdrawing from Afghanistan in early 1989. Although the Soviet Union collapsed a few years later, Moscow still provided aid to President Mohammad Najibullah who led a communist government. This aid was proven to be insufficient as Kabul soon fell to the Mujahideen in 1992.
The Soviet War in Afghanistan created instability within the Afghanistan government as the Mujahideen started to rise. The infamous Mujahideen leader, Ahmad Shah Masood led troops into the capital and sieged the capital, forcing President Najibullah out of power. The Mujahideen eventually formed an Islamic state of Afghanistan. The different factions of the Mujahideen began to fracture as different leaders wanted to push forward their ideas on the future of Afghanistan. They were unable to to agree on how to share power which caused them to descend into a bloody civil war. A few years later, in 1994, a group of Pashtun fundamentalists, made up of students who were educated in religious schools in refugee camps in Pakistan, started a campaign directed at reforming the Afghan government. This group was known as the Taliban. The Soviet War in Afghanistan created it so that the Taliban was able to rise to power and take over Afghanistan.
