By creating the declaration, US colonies were able to break free from political and economic connections to Britain. Declaring independence gave colonists an added alliance with France during the Revolutionary War.

- The Revolutionary War: April 19, 1775 - September 3, 1783
The Revolutionary War was fought in opposition to British attempts to attain greater control over the American colonies. After the French and Indian War, Great Britain was in major debt, deciding to impose higher taxes on its colonies. Laws created include the 1765 Stamp Act, the 1767 Townshend Acts, and the Intolerable Acts. After winning the war, a republican form of government was formed, releasing the American people from subjects of the British crown.
