Peloponessian Wars (1 Jan 140 Jahr – 1 Jan 1453 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Peloponessian Wars were a series of conflicts between the two Greek superpowers: Athenian led, Delian League and the Spartan led Peloponnesian League. Generally speaking, throughout the conflict the Athenians had naval supremacy and the Spartans were a solely land based power. One turning point in the war was the Sicilian Expedition in 415- 413 BC. The Athenians launched a fleet to seize the city state of Syracuse. Athens suffered a massive defeat and it spelled the beginning of the end for the Delian League. At the battle of Aegospotami, Athens' fleet was completely destroyed. After Athens surrendered, Sparta's allies wanted to destroy Athens and enslave the Athenians in a fashion somewhat similar to Carthage after the Punic wars, Sparta refused their allies request. Ironically, Athens would go on to prosper and become the capital of the modern Greek republic whereas Sparta faded into obscurity.
