Te Tipunga – The Growth (1 Jun 1200 Jahr – 1 Jan 1500 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Meaning growth – this period identifies a shift in style away from Pacific forms as Māori became familiar with new resources and tools.
Considered one of the oldest examples of whakairo in Aotearoa, this taonga was found in 1920s in the lake Tangonge near Kaitaia. Carved on both sides it is considered to have been a pare which sat above a door. The dates suggests this would have been made around the arrival of the wider fleet. The style of this taonga is distinctive and shows a connection to the “dog form” linked to Eastern Polynesia Pacific. Manaia are seen as an early development of Māori art.
