The Six-Day war was the third Arab-Israeli war. For decades Arab states had been attacking Israel, the conflict slowly escalating. In 1967 the Egyptian army joined the other Arab states such as Syria and Jordan to attack Israel. Israel preemptively struck the assembling armies. Israel swiftly crushed the Arab alliance with air raids on the Egyptian air force tarmac, Israel similarly crippled the Syrian air force. The Arab alliance was left wide open with no air force so Israel quickly captured territory. Israeli tanks and infantry captured Palestinian territory including old Israel. The UN called a cease-fire on June 7th and called Israel to give up its captured territories. The decisive Israeli victory was demoralizing to Arab countries, old Jerusalem held holy sites for both sides of the war. They were able to win due to US assistance.
