Growth of Transportation: Roads, Cannals, and Steamboats (25 Jun 1817 Jahr – 25 Jun 1824 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

As the United States increased in population, more demand for internal infrastructure increased. Roads were used to connect only a few cities within a state: this change, however, and more and more roads were constructed that connected the major cities in the country. Most of these were paid by the states, with the exception of the Cumberland road, which served as a gateway to the western frontier. Paid by both the central and state governments, this road connected Maryland to Illinois. The Erie canal was the first major canal constructed, and it connected western farms to eastern cities. This canal stimulated economic growth, and it soon stretched from the Great Lakes, all the way to the Mississippi river. Improved transportation meant greater immigrants moving out west, and easy transfer of goods between states, lowering prices of goods. Steamboats were used to navigate rivers in the 19th century. Not only was it faster than a regular sail ship, but it allowed for the disregard of wind, and currents, as it used steam to propel the boat forwards. The steam boat promoted more travel by river and canals, and it increased the speed of travelers and settlers between the states.
