Women Progressive And Settlement Houses (1 Jan 1890 Jahr – 1 Jan 1919 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
Women played a key role in the progressive movement as they worked to improve the lives of the poor. For example, Jane Addams argued that women could protect their own homes from chaos of industrialization by confronting that chaos in their own communities. Therefore, she built Hull House in Chicago which provided education and social opportunities to poor immigrant women. Most of the volunteers in these settlement houses were college educated women who could not get a job as professionals but were not satisfied with just being homemakers. Women also set up social clubs to meet and share common ideas and to help poor women and their children.
However, segregation still exists in the U.S. and so African American women set up thrown clubs such as the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) so that African American women could meet and share common ideas and help one another.
