African Americans started migrating from farms to Southern Cities due to poverty, share cropping debt, and racial oppression and violence in the post reconstruction era. They worked as cooks, janitors, and domestic servants. A few did own their own businesses such as barbershops and construction companies and went into professions such as medicine and law.
